SOUTH NORWOOD COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

Sunday June 30th 2019

South Norwood Community Festival is a free family event a few minute’s walk from Norwood Junction station.

Organised for the Community by volunteers allowing local charities to raise money at the event, SNCF 2019 has a fun zone, music of all kinds, food of every description, and a varied programme of free or low fee events throughout the week (25 – 30 June 2019).

SNCF 2019 builds on last year’s successful festival in the park with local legends Ten Tonne Ska, Ruby Red, Rev and Famous Last Words, performing along with another dozen or so bands on the main stage.

There is also a kids zone, performance area, arts and crafts stalls, a wide variety of food and of course a beer tent. We would like to thank all of the local businesses and sponsors who make this event possible.

This festival is for EVERYONE, it’s free, and it’s friendly!

SOUTH NORWOOD WALK AND TALK

Thursday June 14th 2018

Our historical insight into the local area began outside Stanley Halls where nine people joined John Hickman to learn about the origins of South Norwood and changes through the centuries.

Our stroll took us down to the High Street where John gave us facts about the site of Croydon Canal and then we walked back up the hill to study the amazing architectural features of the Stanley Halls buildings. After walking down Suffolk Road, we re-joined the High Street walking past the Clocktower – an anniversary gift to William Stanley and his wife from the people of South Norwood – before making our way up Selhurst Road and through South Norwood Recreation Ground.

The world’s first reinforced concrete underpass below the railway line provides its own pictorial history. Thanks to John, we were able to spot hidden gems within the photos normally unnoticed by those hurrying through. Sadly, much of the hard work put into these photos has been vandalised.

Continuing down Portland Road, our tour finished at the Albert Tavern. Throughout the walk, John showed us photos of times past and surprised and delighted us with so many interesting facts. We could list them here but then again, we would like you to experience it for yourselves on another of John Hickman’s wonderful talks! We are very grateful to John for giving up his time and energy to support the Friends of South Norwood Country Park.
